New Greyhound Racing Hub Transforms the Industry

A LANDMARK development has reshaped the greyhound racing landscape in Queensland with the completion of The Q, a state-of-the-art facility located in Purga, Ipswich. Officially launched by the Queensland Government, The Q has united the memberships of the former Brisbane and Ipswich Greyhound Racing Clubs into one modern entity.

Already contributing more than $170 million annually to the Brisbane and Ipswich economies, the greyhound industry is set to grow further with The Q now fully operational. The $90 million project, funded through the Racing Infrastructure Fund sourced from Queensland wagering tax revenue, has delivered a game-changing centre designed with animal welfare at its core.

Built entirely from scratch, The Q sets a new benchmark for greyhound racing facilities in Australia. Developed using expert guidance from one of the nation’s leading animal welfare researchers, the venue prioritises best-practice standards in every aspect—from pre-race preparation to post-race recovery and overall greyhound care.

The precinct features three distinct tracks: a straight track, a one-turn track, and a two-turn track—making it the only facility worldwide to offer all three configurations. Supporting infrastructure includes 80m sprint tracks, a 250m slipping track, a young greyhound training area, air-conditioned kennels, plunge pools, cooldown zones, and a veterinary clinic. Integrity facilities ensure safe and professional operations, including washdown bays and promotional zones.

Reflecting a broader community vision, The Q also includes a retired greyhound dog park, provisions for future athletics and NRL fields, and spaces for community activities. The facility supports rehoming initiatives for retired greyhounds, promoting lifelong care and responsible pet ownership.

At the heart of the development stands a striking three-storey grandstand and sports club. Designed to maximise spectator engagement, the structure includes a foyer, dining lounges, a licensed club, broadcast studios, bars, and panoramic terraces overlooking all three racetracks.

With the relocation of operations from the original Brisbane and Ipswich sites, new opportunities have emerged: the Albion location continues to be used by the Albion Park Harness Racing Club, while the former Ipswich site is being repurposed for community-focused uses.

The Q is now positioned as a global leader in greyhound racing infrastructure, combining cutting-edge facilities with a strong commitment to animal welfare and community engagement—cementing its status as a proud new landmark for Queensland.
